The autumn Canton Fair 2026 (the 140th session) runs in Guangzhou in three phases: 15 to 19 October, 23 to 27 October and 31 October to 4 November. Machinery buyers should attend Phase 1, which covers machinery, hardware and tools, industrial automation and intelligent manufacturing, and new energy vehicles. Pre-registration and the buyer badge are free through the official website.
The Canton Fair is China's largest trade fair, and for a machinery buyer from the Middle East it can save months of emails. It can also waste a trip if you arrive in the wrong phase or without the documents that make supplier comparison possible. This guide covers the verified dates for the autumn 2026 session, which phase to attend, how to register, and how to turn booth conversations into a sound purchase.
What is the Canton Fair?
The Canton Fair (officially the China Import and Export Fair) has been held in Guangzhou every spring and autumn since 1957. It is co-hosted by China's Ministry of Commerce and the Guangdong provincial government, and organised by the China Foreign Trade Centre. The exhibition complex is in Pazhou, Haizhu District, Guangzhou.
Each session is split into three phases, and each phase shows different product groups. That split is the first thing a machinery buyer needs to understand.
When is the Canton Fair 2026 and which phase covers machinery?
The autumn session is the 140th Canton Fair. According to China's Ministry of Commerce, the phases are:
Phase | Dates (2026) | Main product groups |
|---|---|---|
Phase 1 | 15 to 19 October | Advanced manufacturing: machinery, hardware, tools, light and electrical, electronics and appliances, new energy vehicles and smart mobility, industrial automation and intelligent manufacturing, new energy resources |
Phase 2 | 23 to 27 October | Building materials and furniture, housewares, gifts and decorations |
Phase 3 | 31 October to 4 November | Health and recreation, toys, baby and maternity, fashion |
For production lines, industrial machines, generators, construction equipment and vehicles, Phase 1 is the one to attend. If you also buy building materials for a factory project, Phase 2 follows a few days later.
What about spring 2027? At the time of writing (5 October 2026) we could not find spring 2027 dates published by the organisers. Third-party sites show estimates based on past years, but those are not confirmed. Check the official Canton Fair website before booking anything.
How do I register and get a buyer badge?
Overseas buyers pre-register through the Buyer Service System on the official Canton Fair website or the Canton Fair app. China's Ministry of Commerce states that new overseas buyers can complete pre-registration on the official website and collect their badge free of charge at buyer registration offices, which include points at airports, railway stations and designated hotels.
Practical points:
- Register with your company details as they appear on your business card and trade licence. The badge is tied to your name and photo.
- Use the same email address throughout, because updates and confirmations come by email.
- Bring your passport. You will need it to collect the badge.
Invitation letters and visas
If your nationality needs a visa for China, the Canton Fair can issue an official invitation letter. For the 139th session the organisers explained that returning buyers apply through the invitation letter section of the Buyer Service System, and new buyers can request the letter at the same time as their badge application, then download or print it from the system. Apply early, because visa processing takes time.
Visa rules for Gulf nationals have changed recently:
- The UAE and Qatar have had mutual visa exemption with China since 2018.
- China's visa-free entry for ordinary passport holders from Saudi Arabia, Oman, Kuwait and Bahrain took effect on 9 June 2025, for stays of up to 30 days for business, tourism and other purposes. It was later extended to 31 December 2026.
Buyers from Egypt, Iraq, North Africa and other countries should check the current visa requirements with the Chinese embassy or consulate in their country. These policies change, so confirm before you travel even if you have visited without a visa before.
How should I plan factory visits around the fair?
The fair shows you samples and sales teams. The factory shows you what you will actually receive. A good trip combines both.
- Before the fair: Shortlist suppliers using the exhibitor search on the official website and contact them in advance. Ask which factory they will deliver from and where it is.
- Use the gaps between phases. With the 2026 dates, the days between Phase 1 and Phase 2 (20 to 22 October) are free for visits. Many machinery factories are in other cities or provinces, so plan travel time realistically.
- Visit the production site, not only a showroom. A trading company can be a legitimate partner, but you should know who builds the machine. Our guide on how to verify a Chinese machinery supplier lists what to check on site.
What should I bring to the fair?
Machinery suppliers can only quote accurately against clear requirements. Bring:
Item | Why it matters |
|---|---|
Written specification sheet | Capacity, product dimensions, materials, automation level |
Site data | Voltage, frequency, phase, available floor space, water and air supply |
Samples or photos of your product | For packaging or processing lines, the machine is designed around your product |
Target standards and certificates | What your country's regulators and your customers require |
A short list of questions | Same questions to every supplier so you can compare answers |
Business cards in English (Chinese on the back helps) | Easier follow-up |
Take photos of every booth, nameplate and price note, and write the booth number on each card. After four days the conversations blur together.
How do I compare suppliers after the fair?
Most real buying decisions happen after you fly home. A simple process:
- Send everyone the same written specification and ask for quotes in the same format: machine list, main component brands, power, output, Incoterm and port, payment terms, warranty terms and lead time.
- Put the quotes in one table. Differences in price usually come from component brands, steel thickness, automation level or what is excluded (installation, spare parts, training).
- Check the supplier: business licence, factory address, export history and references. See our article on importing machinery from China for the full purchase sequence.
- Agree inspection before shipment and write the acceptance criteria into the contract.
Worked example
A beverage company in Egypt visits Phase 1 and collects seven quotes for a bottling line. On paper the prices differ widely. After sending one specification sheet to all seven, three suppliers revise their offers, two turn out to quote a smaller output than requested, and one excludes the conveyor. The real comparison is between two suppliers, and the company sends a team member back for factory visits before choosing.
When does sourcing without travelling make more sense?
The Canton Fair is useful when you want to see many suppliers quickly or when you are entering a new product area. It makes less sense when:
- you already know the machine type and need a specific capacity, which is better handled by direct enquiry to specialised manufacturers;
- the timing does not fit your project, since the fair runs only twice a year;
- the visa, travel and hotel costs during fair weeks outweigh the value of the trip for a single machine;
- the right manufacturers may not exhibit, as can happen with specialised production lines.
In those cases a sourcing partner in China can shortlist manufacturers, run video calls from the factory floor, confirm specifications in writing and inspect before shipment while you stay at home. You can browse what we source in production lines and machines.
